CEFA sales within this category embrace items which represent the height of classical English country design from the age which, in furniture terms, is often described as the age of oak.
This fascinating period was increasingly influenced by the rapidly expanding trade in items being brought from ever more exotic shores, notably by the East India Companies. The English Company received its Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1600 and its dockyard at Deptford is shown in the painting above from about 1660 with its ships prominently displaying the Company flag. It traded in basic commodities from Asia such as cotton, salt and tea, but also porcelain, lacquer-work and jewels, silk and even animals. These new luxury items were keenly sought after and quickly began to influence all aspects of the arts and designs and the CEFA specialists highlight some of these influences as they appear in the items consigned to us for sale.
The items included in these sales are early furniture and relating master works of art, lacquer work and oriental items, old master paintings, sculpture, silver, jewellery, books, prints, manuscripts, needle work, tapestries, porcelain, pottery and ceramics.
